Harmonics in power system.

In an electric power system, a harmonic is a voltage or current at a multiple of the fundamental frequency of the system, produced by the action of non-linear loads such as rectifiers, discharge lighting, or saturated magnetic devices. Harmonic frequencies in the power grid are a frequent cause of power quality problems. Harmonics in power systems result in increased heating in the equipment and conductors, misfiring in variable speed drives, and torque pulsations in motors.

Harmonics are distortion waves in the main voltage or current wave .It reduces the effective value of the voltage or current (RMS) and increase the losses in form of heat. So we must eliminate any harmonics by filters.

A distorted current has not just a non-sine wave but also, in some cases, a higher tension value and, since a capacitor is very sensible when the tension is over a maximum level indicated by the manufacturer, then we have a problem! By eliminating some harmonics, the electric tension from the circuit will be down near the normal level, so the capacitors are safe!

But not just for the capacitor banks, but for entire installation filters became a very useful device!
